Looking back, I remind myself that friends are temporary, but memories are forever. This was going to be our last night together, Cesli and I. Cesli Crum was my best friend that I met in third grade. That year came and went, and though in fourth grade Cesli was held back, we still vowed to always be best friends. Then, that winter of two thousand fourteen, her family decided to move away. I felt devastated, so my mom agreed to have Cesli over one evening right before she left. Thus that is what brought us to be hanging out in my living room. Cesli’s dad knocked on the door, and when she came in, she had in tow a rocks and minerals set she had gotten at the recent Scholastic Book Fair. I felt so overjoyed to see her walk in, but†¦show more content†¦We went into the closet to choose blue and purple cheetah print duct tape, and my mom went upstairs to grab an old purple yoga mat. My mom helped us cut and rip swatches of duct tape to form the spaces and numbers. After th e hopscotch masterpiece was complete, we realized we needed some sort of ‘rock’ to throw to pick up in the middle. I had the idea to use one of the foam building blocks we had on hand. Cesli and I took turns throwing and jumping. â€Å"That was so fun, Jenn!† Cesli giggled. We laughed together for probably a good whole three minutes. After we were out of breath, we realized that time had gone by fast. â€Å"We only have about fifteen minutes until your dad comes!† I griped to Cesli. â€Å"Hey, why don’t you play Cesli one of your piano songs?† my mom suggested. â€Å"Okay!† I decided. I sat down at the piano and let my fingers dance across the keys as I played one of the songs I knew by heart. After I finished the song, Cesli walked over, and asked me shyly, â€Å"I’ve always wanted to play piano. Maybe you could teach me?† Um. . . sure?!† I answered hesitantly. According to the website Stonewall, â€Å"More than 55% of lesbians have experienced bullying.† Nobody wants to be targeted because of who they are or who they love. Why do individuals feel the need to verbally or physically attack another human being because of who they are attracted to? Does it make them feel better about themselves? The greed of Americans for money and land was rejuvenated with the Homestead Act of 1862. In California and Texas there was blatant genocide of Indians by non-Indians during certain historic periods. In California, the decrease from about a quarter of a million to less than 20,000 is primarily due to the cruelties and wholesale massacres perpetrated by the miners and early settlers. Indian education began with forts erected by Jesuits, in which indigenous youths were incarcerated, indoctrinated with non-indigenous Christian values, and forced into manual labor. These children were forcibly removed from their parents by soldiers and many times never saw their families until later in their adulthood. This was after their value systems and knowledge had been supplanted with colonial thinking. One of the foundations of the U.S. imperialist strategy was to replace traditional leadership of the various indigenous nations with indoctrinated graduates of white schools, in order to expedite compliance with U.S. goals and expansion. Probably one of the most ruinous acts to the Indians was the disappearance of the buffalo. For the Indians who lived on the Plains, life depended on the buffalo. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, there were an estimated forty million buffalo, but between 1830 and 1888 there was a rapid, systematic extermination culminating in the sudden slaughter of the only two remaining Plain herds. By around 1895, the formerly vast buffalo populations were practically extinct. The slaughter occurred because of the economic value of buffalo hides to Americans and because the animals were in the way of the rapidly westward expanding population. The end result was widescale starvation and the social and cultural disintegration of many Plains tribes. Genocide entered international law for the first time in 1948; the international community took notice when Europeans (Jews, Poles, and other victims of Nazi Germany) faced cultural extinction. The Holocaust of World War II came to be the model of genocide. We, as the human race, must realize, however, that other genocides have occurred. Genocide against many particular groups is still widely happening today. While being held captive at these schools, the students were forced to learn an idealism completely foreign to them. They would study histories, which had no significance to there lives. Dolphins Of Pern Anne McCaffery created a great book series, The Dragon Riders of Pern, and the one I'm reviewing is, The Dolphins of Pern, she made me think that I was on another planet trying to become a Dolphineer. This 340 page, Sci-fi/Fantasy book has everything, adventure, danger, surgery and dragons. This book starts on the planet Pern, a land where Earth's descendants started to colonize. Pern is a planet with dragons and dolphins and many other strange things. The protagonist is a young boy named Readis, who wants to become a master fisherman like his Uncle. The antagonist is, I think, the hardships he has to go through to reach his dream. One days Readis went out with his uncle to go fishing but got caught in a squall, and their ship went under, but luckily some "ship fish" (dolphins) saved them and brought them to shore, and started to talk. Readis' parent's wanted Readis to have nothing to do with the dolphins and tried to make him forget, but Readis wouldn't and one day he went out with the dolphins to swim, and got a thorn in his foot which crippled his leg. His parents, especially his mom would never forgive the dolphins and forbid Readis from seeing them, even though they tried to warn him about the thorn, which they discovered, using a type of sonar. Readis spent most of his time at school, which was a big honor (only a few people are allowed to go to school). He makes some new friends at the school, like T'Lion the dragon rider, and Avias, the computer from the past which the ancients used, but he still wanted to learn more about the dolphins, so defying his parents he runs away to become a Dolphineer. He finds a nice spot where the dolphins can swim into if they needed any help or just wanted to play. Even with the dolphins, Readis wonders if his parents miss him at all. During a storm many dolphins are injured and Readis, is one of the few people who knows how to sew dolphins back up. Because of his brave efforts the Tillek, which is kind of like a king to the dolphins, comes and gives him his Dolphineer status with a big coronation. All of his friends are there, and even his mom and dad. A passage that really got to me was when Readis and his friend T'Lion had to sew up a dolphin, because its intestines were falling out. "'Wait a minute. I'm looking..." T'Lion riffled through the pages of the boo, which he kept well above the water and any splashes. "Oooo! Ugh!" He paused, lowering the book slightly to pear at something. "Ah, here. Human intestines." He bent down to peer at the injured [Dolphin]." I found this passage to be very important, because this is where T' Lion and Readis discover that they have what it takes to be a dolphineers. Researchers did an annual statistics report showing that a million of girl fetuses are being aborted, prior to tha t, tens of thousands of girl infants are being abandoned as well. From ancient practices (Eric Baculinao, 2004) , if a Chinese family without son will face poverty and neglect as Chinese believe that male offspring symbolize continuity of lineage and protection in old age! With advances in medical technology there was a widespread of cheap and portable ultra-sound scanner in the 1980s, that allowed parents to choose their baby sex, this kind of practices are called pre-natal sex selection. If the parents discovered that their baby is a girl they will choose to abort it and try again for a boy. Researched done by (Eric Baculinao, 2004) on Missing Girls, showing the trend of boys and girls being born from a Chinese-tank report. We can see huge significant difference in number of boys and girls being born in recent years. And by looking at the table we can see that parents prefer boys than girls. According to Eric Baculinao, 2004, in the year 2002 a survey conducted in a central China village shows that out of 820 women there are more than 300 of them undergo abortion before. And one third of them admitted that they were trying to select their babys sex. (Sheryl WuDUNN, 1992) In a few decades China has made everyone richer but in some ways, China also made life difficult for the nation 565 million women. In China, women are being discriminated in the area of jobs, housing and land location. For example, whenever company is hiring women they usually look for physical attractiveness of the women as they can be used as an ornament in offices or lure businesses for the company. And they usually have lesser chances to get promoted to higher position in their working life. A survey conducted by (Peoples Daily Online, 2010) on females graduates, showing that 21 percent of female students graduating this year found jobs by end of February, much lower than the male student percentage which is 29.5 percent. From the percentage we can obviously see that females are lagging behind in the employment rates. Beginning of 2009 (China Human Rights, N.D), Jiangsu provincial education department did a random survey on 100 employer unit to find out which gender they prefer to hire. The result was 53% will hire male graduates and 35% 36% wanted female graduates, the rest did not have any gender restriction. From the percentage from the survey, we can see that out of 100 companies more than 50 companies prefers to hire males than females. They are being discriminated even further, as even if they have outstanding grades and having many qualification certificates it is no better than an identification card of a male graduate. And i feel that the discrimination against females in China is addressed. Beside from being denied access to good jobs even though they had good qualifications, there have been cases of domestic violence against females in China. According to some survey on domestic violence (Jeffery Hays, 2008), there is around 30 percent occurring in families. The All China Women Federation (ACWF), (Cheng Yingqi, 2010), annually received 40,000 to 50,000 complains since 2004, usually this cases involved husbands acting violently towards them. (Percentage of Females Domestic Violence Victims) From the table, we can see that out of 473 females domestic violence victims around 37.6 percent are between the ages of 31-40 years old and 33 percent of them only had Middle school education background. And they usually suffer physical, psychological and sexual abuse an average of 7.4 times a year (Cheng Yingqi, 2010). SECTION IV WHERE CAN WE START TO FIX THE PROBLEM? There are several ways that the discrimination and prejudice against the females in china can be improved. Example, the All-China Womens Federation (ACWF) was created in April 3, 1949, and dedicated for Chinese women of all ethnic groups in all walks of life. (ACWF, N.D) The federation created laws and regulations with the help of government to safeguard women rights and promote equal rights among men and women in all areas. The China Law center hosted a workshop on anti-discrimination laws with Sichuan University law school. (Yale Law School, 2008) The workshop explore ways which that American approach combating against discrimination, this would provide helpful insight for Chinese academics, lawyers, and activists  seeking to reduce discrimination in China.   Several other organizations in the world are also trying to help females in China. For example the UN Action for women (Department of Public Information, 1996), in 1995 after the Womens conference China provided training for 10 million women in rural area. These training give women in rural area some basic education as most of them are illiterate. The Anti-Domestic violence Network of China law (N.D), specialized in domestic violence against women and eliminating gender based violence. They also promote gender equality as well as social development in the community. SECTION V CONCLUSION Having research about the discrimination of females in China and what has been done so far to help ease the problem. I feel that there is still much effort needed on the China governments enforcement in discrimination against females. Even though there are organizations lending a helping hand for women in China there will still be discrimination against them. The possibility of removing discrimination against females in China is still not possible yet, even though there are laws created to aid them as well as campaigns prompting not to discriminate girls. For example, the Family planning propaganda sends a message saying Boy or girl, it is the same Both can carry on the family name (Research-China.Org, 2005) and the message is far most prominent. With all this aids and campaigns helping females in china, I still strongly believe that discrimination against females in China is still an issue and cant be solved so easily. Part 2: Explain whether any one of the factors in the list was more important than the others. The ending of white minority rule in South Africa was down to a mixture of all of these points. Without all of these points, the ending of the majority rule might not have happened. All of the points form the international isolation all of the way up to the actions of De Klerk contributed to the end of the majority rule. However, if I had to put them into order of importance, I would say that Mandela’s actions were the most important, closely followed by the actions of De Klerk. Nelson Mandela was the one most involved with the ending of the majority rule, as he has the most links with the different points. Firstly, Mandela was responsible for the organization of the MK, and for many of the other ANC movements and many other black protests. He was an inspiration for many of the protests and riots even when he was in prison. If he hadn’t have done any of these things in the first place, then the government would not have imprisoned him, and then he would not have gained the international and political attention that he did while he was in prison. This international and political awareness of the problems in South Africa that Nelson Mandela caused also brought around the economic sanctions. The sanctions and the vast disinvestments had put South Africa’s economy into considerable trouble, and this is what drove De Klerk to realise that the Apartheid had to be stopped. If he had not realised this, then he would not have come to power in South Africa, and he would not have released Mandela from prison, starting the negotiations that led to the CODESA talks. De Klerk was also pressured into these actions by the increased violence caused by black protests and riots after Mandela’s release. Again, if Mandela had not have been around, the inspiration would not have been there, the MK would not have been set up, and who knows what would have happened. Another link with Mandela is the fact that De Klerk decided to talk to him instead of one of the other black rights leaders around at the time. This is down to the fact that De Klerk saw Mandela as someone he could compromise with him, a reasonable man who would see things fairly, and would not solely be out for revenge. If Mandela had not of been perceived like this by De Klerk, then it is possible that De Klerk would have followed the same route as his predecessors had, and he could have just continued with the idea of apartheid, and white minority rule. Therefore, without all of Mandela’s actions, De Klerk would not have been as effective in the ending of white minority rule in South Africa, the economic sanctions might not have been used as early as they were, or to such a great extent, and the pressure from the black protests would not have been as strong as it was. However, along with Mandela’s actions, the other factors had to take place themselves, and without these, the end of the white minority rule would not have been reached when it was.
